Unveiling Your home Sanctuary: A Guide to Discovering Your personal Interior Design Style
I am often asked, “What is your personal style?” I love it all! So I tend to say Eclectic.
I appreciate Minimalism. So clean and organised, Editting at it’s best! Living in a Minimal space feels so light like staying in a hotel. I equally love Maximalism - travels, souveniers, stories, collections!!
Some people fit distinctly in one category. While others, like myself, fall into a few.
Having lived in several locations and having spent over a decade in England my accent has morphed a bit. I am often asked, ‘where are you from?’ It’s hard for me to answer because I was born in America but spent over a decade in Britain even becoming Anglicised. Once at a local Italian cafe, the barrista asked me the common question and when I said I am from a few different places. He simply said ‘ Ah, like a cocktail - a mix!’ from then on I have used this term.
So when I am designing for myself it is a bit like making a cocktail too.
Ooh, I love this modern layout such clean lines. and seamless. No wait that looks too sterile! I need more texture. Yes, yes this vintage rug will do!
Oh no wait it looks like a modern furniture showroom. Let’s add more vintage pieces and antiques and layers. Oh no, it looks like a garage sale. This little dance goes on and on until I strike the right balance and form the perfect interior cocktail!

Gather Inspiration:
Create a digital or physical mood board by collecting images that resonate with you. Explore platforms like Pinterest, Instagram, or interior design magazines. Pay attention to the recurring themes, colors, and textures in the images you're drawn to. This visual representation will help you identify patterns and narrow down your preferences.
Define Key Elements:
As you sift through your inspiration, start defining key elements that stand out. Are you attracted to clean lines and simplicity, or do you prefer a mix of vintage and modern elements?
Identify your preferred color palette, furniture styles, and decorative accents. This process will help you articulate and refine your design preferences.
Explore Different Styles:
Don't limit yourself to one specific style. Interior design is a dynamic field with various influences. Explore styles such as contemporary, traditional, mid-century modern, bohemian, industrial, and more. Take note of elements from each that resonate with you. Your ideal style might be a fusion of different aesthetics. Mine certainly is!
Consider Your Lifestyle:
Practicality is key when discovering your interior design style. Consider your lifestyle, daily routines, and the functionality of your space. If you have a busy household with children or pets, a more durable and low-maintenance design might be suitable. A single professional may opt for a sleek and sophisticated style that reflects their personal taste.
